We've Got Your Back

Thursday, July 18 was another hot & sticky day with temp in the mid-90’s and high humidity.  Shortly before 2:30 PM, Pleasant Valley FD was dispatched to a fire in a print shop in Plain City.  Upon arrival, they found a complex of 3 structures with one heavily involved.  Mutual aid was immediately requested.   As the fire grew and additional companies requested, Union County EMA’s rehab unit responded.  The fire would eventually become a 4-alarm.  About 25 minutes into the incident, Box 15 was also requested.  We responded in Rehab 1 with a crew of 3.  Upon arrival, we partnered with the Union County group, supplementing them with a misting fan, rehab towels, Sqwincher, granola bars, chairs and additional hands.  Together, we served more than 100 firefighters.  Norwich Township also brought in their large Decon trailer to use as an air conditioned shelter.  With companies from 10 fire departments, this was mutual aid at its finest.

Then, shortly after the fire was knocked down and overhaul started, Box 15 was requested for a fire in a high value home in Genoa Township in Delaware County.  That fire quickly escalated to a second alarm, due to the high heat.  Rehab 1 got permission to clear the Plain City fire and respond to the Genoa Township fire – 24 miles away.  One of our members responded directly from his home to establish an initial rehab sector in conjunction with Delaware County EMS while we were enroute.  Because we had expended a lot of our resources on the previous incident, we had Rehab 2 also respond.  When that unit arrived, we released Rehab 1 to return to quarters.

In all, we deployed 8 rehab chairs and our misting fan at the Plain City fire.  Between both fires, we used 4 cases of bottled water, 2 gallons of Sqwincher, 88# of ice, more than a case of granola bars and traveled 93 miles round trip.  Not bad for a day’s work.
